Alfonsus astronomus Castelle rex ac hispanie fuit, quem Hali interpretatur quasi altus fons. Dictus est autem ab alto fonte, id est sapientia, quia composuit has tabulas non quidem per se, Sed per conductum 60 astronomorum, quibus hanc summam pecunie dedit Decies 100000 florenorum pro correctione tabularum practicatarum in meridianum Toleti.
German Translation:
Der Astronom Alfons war König von Kastilien und Spanien. Haly Abenrudian deutet den Namen gleichsam als „altus fons“ („tiefe Quelle“). Er ist aber nach „tiefer Quelle“ benannt, d. h. Weisheit, da er diese Tafeln zusammenstellte, allerdings nicht selbst, sondern durch die Zusammenbringung von 60 Astronomen, denen er folgende Geldsumme gab: 1 Million Gulden für die Korrektur astronomischer Tafeln, erstellt für den Meridian von Toledo.
English Translation:
The astronomer Alfonso was King of Castile and Spain. Haly [Abenrudian] interprets the name as the "deep source". He is called the "deep source", that is wisdom, because he compiled these tables, not by himself, however, but by bringing together 60 astronomers, to whom he gave the following sum of money a million 100000 florins for the correction of the astronomical tables used in the South of Toledo [Tables of Toledo]..
